This historic Berkshire town is best-known for Windsor Castle, one of the homes of the British Royal Family and one of the largest inhabited castles in the world. Originally built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, it has been used by successive monarchs since the time of Henry I, and therefore showcases a rich history. Many parts of the Castle are open to the public, including the precincts; the lavish 19th-century State Apartments; the Albert Memorial Chapel; Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House; and the 15th-century St George’s Chapel, the burial place of monarchs such as Henry VIII. Audio guides are available and the Changing of the Guard takes place in the quadrangle when the Queen is in official residence.
The town is a fashionable tourist destination, and is home to two railway stations, a theatre and several large hotels. There is a wide selection of gift shops, as well as both designer and high-street shops. Places to eat range from continental cafes and historic pubs to wine bars and stylish restaurants. The Thames runs through the heart of the town and there are regular riverboat cruises providing exclusive views of the Castle.
Legoland Windsor is built on the site of the former Windsor Safari Park. This very popular theme park is mainly aimed at children, and offers a mixture of Lego-themed rides, models and building workshops.
Other places of interest include: Windsor Leisure Centre, home to a wave machine, giant slides, interactive water play features and a spa pool; the Royal Windsor Wheel, giving a stunning view of the surrounding area in summer months; the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum, a family-oriented local history museum in the Guildhall; and Extreme Motion, an adventure park offering skating, bike hire, adventure golf, bungee trampoline and Zorbing.
